2013 Inductees - Bill J. Leichsenring and Darrell Wallace

Bill J. Leichsenring Bill J. Leichsenring

Bill J. Leichsenring was born on June 19, 1956 and grew up and lived in Amana his entire life - living in the same house that was built when he was born in 1956. Bill is a graduate of Amana High School in 1974 and attended Kirkwood Community College. He is the President and Owner of the Ox Yoke Inn and Life’s a Banquet, LC, where he started in 1974 and has served in all capacities for his business.

Bill is a member of several organizations, which include: Member of the First Lutheran Church in Cedar Rapids, Iowa; Iowa Restaurant Association from 1980 - 1996 where he was Chairman of the Board in 1992 and currently serves as an Honorary Director; National Restaurant Association from 1988 - 1997 where he represented the State of Iowa and is currently an Honorary Director; National Livestock and Meat Board from 1990 - 1994 which represents the National Restaurant Association; Kirkwood Community College Food Service Advisory Board; Amana Colonies Convention and Visitors Bureau from 2009 - 2012 and 1990 - 1998 where he was President of the Board from 1993 - 1996 and 2011; Amana Community School District 1979 - 1982; Clear Creek Amana Community School Foundation from 2004 - 2010 where in 2007, Bill assisted in starting the Clear Creek Amana Masters Golf Tournament which is a fundraiser for scholarships and endowments; Clear Creek Little League Coach for 2 years; and he operated the Clear Creek Amana High School Softball Concession Stand for 2 years.

Bill has received the Distinguished Alumnus Award from Kirkwood Community College in 1994 and the Restaurateur of the Year, Iowa Restaurant Association Award in 1995.

Bill is married to Karen since 1983 and they have two children - Lauren and Taylor and they were both graduates of Clear Creek Amana and the University of Iowa. Lauren and her husband Austin currently live in Newark, Delaware. Taylor and her Fiancée currently live in North Liberty, Iowa.

Bills hobbies include reading, golfing, and traveling and while the girls were in school, Karen and Bill attended their many activities.

Darrell WallaceDarrell Wallace

Darrell Wallace was born in Burlington, Kansas on February 18, 1939 and lived there until 1945, at which time his family moved to the North English and Kinross area. Darrell graduated from North English High School in 1957. He played football, basketball, and track.

Darrell was the Transportation and Maintenance Director for the Clear Creek Amana School District from 1977 - 2001, retiring in 2001. Darrell also drove the school bus on routes and activities from 1977 - 2012 for Clear Creek Amana. From 1999 to 2012, he drove the school bus for activities for Regina Schools.

Darrell was involved in many community activities. He was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Oxford, past president of the Oxford Optimists, was a member of the Clear Creek Amana Booster Club - volunteering for several of their activities, and also served as a 4-H leader for the Cosgrove Hustlers 4-H Club from 1975 to 1982. Darrell also coached his sons for several years in the Clear Creek Little League and was also a member of the Clear Creek Little League Board.

Darrell married Eileen (Volk) on September 25, 1965 at St. Peter’s Church in Cosgrove and was married for 47 years. Darrell passed away on April 21, 2013. They have four sons, all Clear Creek Amana graduates - Jeff - 1985 graduate and Dawn Morrissey, Iowa City, Iowa. Jeff has 3 children - Brady (13), Kennedy (12), and Madigan (10) and they all attend Regina Schools; Dan - 1986 graduate and Kristine, Denver, Colorado. Dan has 2 children - Kenna (9) and Jacqueline (6) and they attend school in Denver, Colorado. Bob -1988 graduate, Atlantic Beach, Florida; and Steve - 2001 graduate and Jessica, North Liberty, Iowa.

Many of Darrell’s hobbies included woodworking and baking cookies and bread, and gardening. Most important to Darrell was his family, especially his children and grandchildren, where he loved spending time attending their events.
