2010 Inductee

Pat KellenbergerPat Kellenberger

Pat began driving bus when he was 16 years old. He drove a regular route as well as the events he participated in - driving the bus for those events during his high school years.

Pat worked part-time during his senior year at the school doing custodial work. A year after his graduation in 1969 from Amana High School, he started working part-time as a custodian while he attended Kirkwood full-time. He started working full time in 1971 as an assistant custodian and he also drove a regular bus route. In 1972, Pat became head custodian and continued to drive a regular bus route.

Pat left the school in August of 1973 to work full-time at Amana Builders for two years. During the summer of 1975, Pat was approached by the President of the School Board about the possibility of coming back to Amana Community Schools. He was rehired as head building custodian in August, 1975, remaining in that capacity until his retirement in January of 2006. Pat also drove a regular bus route during all but two of those years.

Pat oversaw several construction phases at the Amana site, which required long hours. Every work day began with a “building check”, including Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays. He was on call 24 hours a day.

Pat also kept the clock and scoreboard at every home game, boys as well as girls, for Amana High School and drove the team bus to every out-of-town game through 1991, at which time Amana and Clear Creek began the whole-grade sharing program. He also kept clock and the scoreboard at the high school in Tiffin until 2008.

Pat retired from the Clear Creek Amana School District on January 31, 2006, a day after his 55th birthday. Cumulatively, Pat worked for the school system for 36+ years. He took great pride in the Amana site inside and out - some might say he “owned” it.

Today, Pat still continues to drive the Amana bus route in the afternoons and helps out with pool maintenance when needed.

Pat was also an Amana Sports Booster member 20+ years, serving as an officer several years. He worked concession stands during high school baseball and softball games for Amana Community Schools. He also kept the softball field in Amana groomed all the years he was employed at the school.

He worked at the Amana VIP for several years when the Amana Community School helped with concessions. Pat continued to work concessions on behalf of the school at large community events such as the World Ag Expo, Farm Progress Shows, Tanager Balloon Festival, etc. He also served on the South Amana Volunteer Fire Department from 1972 to 1992 and served as Fire Chief and was in charge of fire training for the department for several years.

Pat played tuba in the local Die Tiefen Keller Kinder band and performed at many local events, including Oktoberfest from 1976 through 2006. He also performed at the Smithsonian in the Summer of 1976.

Pat is a member of St Mary’s Church in Oxford and serves on the Parish Council. He enjoys woodworking and spending time with his two grown daughters, Beth and Emily (both graduates of Clear Creek Amana) and his two grandchildren, Blaine and Reese. Pat and his wife Kathy reside in Middle Amana.

Pat Kellenberger has been an icon at the Amana school site. He is the number one resource on the Amana building and is still called often for his guidance and support.

Congratulations to Pat for being induced into the
2010 Clear Creek Amana Hall of Fame!
