Lessons on Careers: Reading, Writing and Math Skills Needed!
Nanci Young, Workplace Learning Connection
What do a nurse, an architect, a police officer and an electrical lineman all have in common? Well, other than the fact that they are all career professionals, they also were willing to share their time with the 4th and 5th grade class at North Bend Elementary School. On December 2, 2009, North Bend hosted a Tools of the Trade event coordinated by the Workplace Learning Connection.
Denise Kaestner, RN, from North Liberty Family Practice led three students in a role play of how a typical doctor’s office visit goes for someone with strep throat. 5th grader McKenzie Justice donned a lab coat and a stethoscope and helped take 4th grade patient Jill Shrader’s blood pressure. Then, 4th grade Dr. Jake Neuzil came in and simulated checking the patient’s ears, eyes and throat before “writing” a prescription.

Coralville Police Officer Mike Barney had 4th grader Ellie Bowman hand cuff one of the other presenters and then passed around two sets of handcuffs while discussing the various tools that he uses in the course of his job.
Linn County REC Lineman Jeff Brimeyer brought a big bag of tools, one that could even stretch 20 feet. He passed around two sets of wiring, one for above-hazards of his job and also the thrill he gets when he sees the lights go on around him after he’s called in during a power failure.
The event wrapped up with Bill Peterson from Peterson Architect showing the students blue prints and computer-aided designs for a local assisted living facility. He gave the students advice on which schools to attend if they want to be in the field of architecture.
Mr. Mark Hovey, Guidance Counselor for North Bend, partnered with the Workplace Learning Connection to bring this event to the North Bend 4th and 5th graders. For more information about other career education programming, go to www.workplace-learning.org or contact the school’s guidance office.
North Bend 2nd & 3rd Graders See Awesome Uniforms!
Question: How many years does a veterinarian go to school?

Dr. Beth Shannon from North Liberty Pet Clinic with Bailey and students from North Bend Elementary School 2nd and 3rd grade
Answer: 20 total years!
This question, along with several others, was asked and got answered by four adult volunteers at North Bend Elementary School on November 11, 2009. The event, Awesome Uniforms, is an elementary school program delivered by the Workplace Learning Connection working with Mr. Mark Hovey, Guidance Counselor at North Bend. North Bend 2nd and 3rd grade students were treated to a presentation by a pharmacist, a veterinarian, an archeologist and a police officer. Each adult spoke with the students about his/her job while emphasizing the importance of several school subjects that the children are currently studying: reading, writing, and math. They also stressed the need for active listening, working in a team, and problem-solving skills. When asked, “What is a career?”, most students’ hands shot up. It was clear that many of them knew the answer!
Careers exploration events such as Awesome Uniforms are a fun way to learn about potential future jobs and exposing children to careers in their geographic area. For more information about career exploration in the schools, talk with the school guidance counselor or go to www.workplace-learning.org.
Policies & Procedures
- Supervision on the playground begins at 8:00. If it is raining students will go to the gym. Please do not send students prior to 8:00. Breakfast is served from 8:00-8:25.
- Students can go to their lockers and classrooms beginning at 8:10. School begins at 8:15.
- If your child will be gone for any reason, please call the main office at 626-3950.
- We have two vehicle loops. The lot to the east is for cars, the lot to the west is for buses only. Both loops are one way with the entrance at the east and exit to the west.
- If you are bringing your child into school, please park in the parking lot, not in the loop which is a fire lane. If you are just dropping your child off but not coming into the building you can pull through the loop.
- The interior set of doors will be locked during the day. Please step to the window, there is an intercom to speak with the office. Please use the intercom system so we know you are there. They will buzz you in. The far door on the right is the one you will need to go to in order to get in. Once in, please check in at the office. We will have you sign in and get a visitor badge.
- If you arrive at school between the hours of 8:15 and 3:20, you need to stop in the office to sign in and get a name badge to walk down to the classes. This is for the safety of the students and so we know who is in the building during the hours of school. If a staff member sees you in the hallway without a tag, we will ask you to go sign in at the office. Please do not be offended, we are trying to keep your kids safe!
- Trading cards of any kind and electronics such as Game Boys and IPods need to stay at home.
- Cell Phones- if you want your child to have a cell phone for safety reasons that is fine. However, when at school they should be in their bag at all times and turned OFF. We have plenty of phones at school that if they need to call you we can assist them.
- If your emergency contact information changes, please notify the office so we can update our records.
